Historique :	Comme beaucoup d'artistes du 20e siècle, Foujita (1886-1968) s'est essayé à la céramique. Mais si pour des artistes occidentaux la démarche est sinon originale tout du moins novatrice, pour cet artiste japonais c'est presque un retour aux sources dans la mesure où la céramique est considérée comme un art majeur au Japon. Cette petite oeuvre a été réalisée par Foujita entre 1947 et 1949, à une période où l'artiste s'attache à travailler sur le thème des Fables de la Fontaine. On peut rapprocher cette oeuvre d'une série de gouaches de petit format reprenant le motif du chat anthropomorphe datant de 1949 et réalisé à New York, collection K. Foujita.
