Historique :	L'Ecole polytechnique possède une collection d'environ 500 instruments à caractère scientifique gérée par la bibliothèque, parmi lesquels 83 instruments de physique sont classés au titre des monuments historiques. Cette collection résulte de la confiscation opérée à la Révolution française : l'école en a été attributaire par un décret de la Convention. Se sont aussi formées des collections d'instruments de physique, de modèles de chimie et de minéralogie, entre autres. Certains instruments ont été fabriqués pour illustrer les cours et servaient très souvent à l'expérimentation en laboratoire. La collection d'instruments de physique rassemble des appareils permettant l'étude des propriétés générales des corps, de la chaleur, de l'électricité, du magnétisme, de l'acoustique et de l'optique, allant du XVIIIe siècle au XXe siècle.
